state, pennsylvania, which clearly seems to be leaning obama? >> according to the public polls, obama is doing really well in pennsylvania. maybe he's got some private polls that he's doing inside his campaign that shows some other trends developing in pennsylvania. i haven't seen any public polls that would indicate he's got a shot in pennsylvania. i also haven't seen any indication that the romney campaign is spending any campaign money advertising in pennsylvania. if they are, it is really not much. but as i say, maybe there is something that his campaign knows that we don't yet know because right now it looks like obama is doing really, really well in pennsylvania. and the surrounding states, new jersey, new york, or maryland for that matter. i think romney does have a shot obviously in some of the other states like ohio, not that far away, but pennsylvania looks like a long shot. he was doing some fund-raising there earlier today, had a rally in pennsylvania, but we'll see if this is serious, this notion that he potentially has a shot in pennsylvania. if he does, it would be a drama

quinnipiac university. other polls out show president obama and romney locked in a tight fight. according to the nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll, president obama has a slight lead in nevada and north carolina but basically within the margin of error. and in virginia, a new poll from suffolk university/nbc 12 puts obama slightly ahead of romney, also within the margin of error. so, how can romney turn it around? it may not be easy. some people within this romney campaign have concluded he's not actually a very good politician. here's what one romney official explained to politico. he said -- now romney's former rival newt gingrich doesn't go quite that far, but he says that romney needs to reform his thinking. >> i think they're only now beginning to come to grips with the general election. they had a very -- >> scary -- >> they had a very successful primary strategy. in a primary you can raise enough money to build a motor boat and drive to where you want to get to in the primary. in the general election you're like a sail boat. the system is so much bigger than you. >> it is hard

. they say the poll show obama leading by more than think he is. it's not they're saying the polls are wrong. when every national poll -- i don't think we can say -- when fox news' poll shows obama ahead in a bunch of swing states recently, i don't think we can say the polls are wrong and biased because fox news conservative leading. they show what the polls are showing as well. the president has a strong lead. pollsters have a strong incentive to have their polls be accurate, because that's what their profession is. i'm skeptical they're tries to missample people. the finding more democrats are anyway poll, when a democratic candidate is popular, more people call themselves democrats. that doesn't mean the poll is wrong. more people call themselves democrats than they might have been four or five weeks ago. >> let me bring in mark mckinnon. we'll bring you into this conversation. i want to start with something that newt gingrich said this morning on "morning joe." mark, let me play that. >> everybody i talk to agrees he's had two and a half very tough weeks, and i do agree. i think th

these polls overall, i think there's a little hype going on with the obama numbers. if you look at the ras musen numbers, if you look at battleground states, he shows the race tied and if you look at a lot of these polls coming out across the country, romney and obama are tied with independents. that's a key indicator for your viewer to keep watching. if romney's tied with independents, then it's a question of the turnout model. every number i see shows republicans very enthusiastic. that shows this race continues to be tight and winnable for governor romney. >> jen, do you think this race is winnable for mitt romney? >> we're going to run in every state like we're five points down and we've always said this race was going to be close, so our message to our supporters is don't be complacent. don't rest on any polls. put your blinders on. keep focus on the playbook. we'll sleep and hopefully celebrate on november 7th. we know there's going to be twists and turns. it's a narrower path than i think we would like, but still, 38 days is a long time to go. >> she's got to say that, right

website called unskewedpolls.com that takes all those same polls that show president obama leading and claims to correct the bias, turning romney deficits into commanding romney leads. the idea behind it is simple. all polls base the outcome on what pollsters believe the electorate will look like, how many democrats versus how many republicans they think will actually turn out. getting that partisan makeup wrong can tilt the predictions. the people that don't believe the polls say this time, pollsters think the 2012 electorate will look a lot like 2008 and this they say is wrong. notice i said this time. back in 2004, democrats complained that the polls which showed george w. bush leading were overestimating the number of republicans who would vote. they were wrong. the polls were right. now, in 2000 al gore said don't believe the polls. polls showed him losing narrowly. polls were right. in fact, it's hard to find an example of the polls on average getting it wrong unless you go back to 1948, when they predicted thomas dewey defeated president harry truman. cnn political contributor a

look at the poll number. president obama leads romney in swing state polls of nbc news polls show him up seven points in new hampshire, even though mr. romney has a home in new hampshire. he's up two points in nevada and north carolina. this comes up on top of other polls, like he's up ten points in ohio. foints. no republican has won without idaho. ohio. these are very solid numbers even though no matter how you try and do the margin of error, he is up. >> the president is up in basically every swing state that you can look out, including ones like north carolina where he won very narrowly. if you look at ohio and pennsylvania, the lead is particularly dramatic and that is driven by the fact that mitt romney is such a poor candidate because he sent job overseas, he worked at bain capital directly impacted people there. and also another thing i wop point to in ohio in particular, he was forced to come out and support the anti-union sb-5 ballot initiative during the primary campaign and that left a negative taste in voters' mouths in ohio as well. >> and sp-5 was defeated? >> that's ri
